How Is TV Affecting Your Child's Sleep?

Screens and digital devices have slowly grown to be a bigger part of a child's life at a younger and younger age. But while many tablets and television shows can offer stimulating ways to entertain and educate children, TV may also come with some serious adverse effects on sleep. The Relationship Between TV and Sleep

Many parents know that the blue light from television and other screened devices can upset circadian rhythm if it's viewed too late into the night. But according to new research from the University of Washington, the effects of TV on sleep may go even further than that.

The study, which looked at more than 2,000 children between the ages of 4 months and 3 years, found that of children who watched television, 27% had irregular bedtime schedules and 34% had irregular nap schedules. But in addition to this, the researchers found that the total number of hours of television watched per day correlated to a greater likelihood of disturbed sleep schedule. While no causal relationship was definitively established, this suggests that watching TV may affect a child's sleep schedule no matter when they view it.
